Digital signage is
the use of digitally powered signs (such as
plasma display panels or
liquid crystal displays (LCDs),
computer monitors and normal televisions) to replace and enhance traditional
media. Digital signage is revolutionizing the media and information industries
by allowing the central and rapid update of content and its immediate delivery
to specific audiences in specific locations.
 The components
needed for a digital signage system include:
  - A computer, to
which finished content is uploaded and from where it is distributed to
  different displays in the network.

  - Digital
signage displays can be plasma displays, LCD monitors,  or CRT monitors.

Uses of Digital Signage:

Digital Signage Distribution Technology
When considering a digital
signage project, users usually focus on display types and content management
software. For the integrator, however, there is an important component that the
user rarely considers: the distribution technology and platform. This
infrastructure transmits the digital video and audio from the server to the
appropriate displays, and is a key contributor to actual digital signage
performance. In addition, as the connecting component for all displays, the
distribution technology can be a significant part of the project budget. That's
why choosing the correct distribution technology is vital in ensuring a
successful digital signage installation
LCD monitors offer an excellent alternative to
plasmas, especially for desktop applications, as they are generally smaller
and lighter than plasma screens. LCDs offer picture quality that is
comparable with plasmas and have a lower power consumption, which in turn
helps to keep temperature and noise to a minimum. So if your application
requires a large number of screens in a relatively small area, or temperature
and noise could be an issue, LCD screens will be your best option.
Example
Application: Retail
Many large retail
superstores are implementing LCD screens throughout their locations so that they
can send promotions and offers to specific areas of the store. Because of their
size and sharp picture quality they can be placed amongst products down the
store aisles. This enables special offers or price promotions to be sent
directly to the place where it will be seen. And because this content is
dynamically driven by computer the message can be changed as frequently as
required. In-short a LCD monitor network can help maximize sales revenue by
cross-selling and up-selling to the captive audience in-store.
Plasma Screens are perfect for retail,
nightclubs/pubs airports etc where your marketing message can de delivered
dynamically straight to your audience with perfect clarity and sounds.
Plasma screens
offer a large, high-definition screen and perform well under low or ambient
light conditions and also offer extreme viewing angles, so your messages can be
seen even if people aren't directly in front of the screen.
Example Application: Transport

Plasma screens are the perfect medium for displaying messages and information in
public spaces such as airports, train stations & bus stations. Their high
definition and excellent viewing angles make them ideal for travelers wishing to
view information such as departure and arrival times.
More next month...
Best wishes,
